I swapped the memory (even though it had already done 3 passes of memtest earlier in the night with no errors) and it was still taking forever, so I swapped hard drives, again, same problem, so I switched to a non slipstreamed Windows XP install, same problem, so I switched Windows XP installers to an old copy of Pro I had laying around, slipstreamed in the drivers and SP3, same problem….

The most obvious thing to check would've been the flash drive I was installing from Once I switched flash drives I had no problems and it installed in less than an hour, with a slipstreamed version with drivers, service pack, etc.

I think the blue screen was caused by me installing silly software; I found some little mod program to allow you to install Windows Vista software (in my case, the sidebar)

I'm 90% sure that broke it, as Windows gave me a warning after installing it saying my system may become unstable, even though I promptly uninstalled it, the Windows popup warned me to reinstall Windows to be safe.

Runtime Error @ Death by Audio 1/24/09 by thepiratehat

I recently downloaded the freeware Chem Toolbox.

I installed it on my newer laptop with no problem, but when I installed it on my desktop I ran into a problem.

The problem isn't with installation [to clarify], it occurs after I try to run the program. I get the message "Run-Time error '50003' Unexpected error"

How can I fix this???

To answer your questions:
When CCleaner "scan(s) issues" for registry, it comes up "missing shell dll" for VB6KO.DLL in system32 directory.

Runtime errors show when bringing up different web pages on the net; not with CCleaner. CCleaner is WONDERFUL! Have used it for years. As you suggested, I have ticked off the two you suggested in under the "Advanced" table of internet tools . Will restart IE when I finish this forum. Have already checked out a couple sites that reliably gave me these runtime errors. Looks like it resolved it. Thank you!

Will delete the registry entry through CCleaner. And yes, I did have malware so it just might be left over? Have already worked through the malware removal with TimW prior to this thread and the pc has a "clean bill of health."

Regarding .NET versions. I've recently gotten this pc from my grandfather; I've deleted many applications from it that I don't need. How can I tell which .NET version is being used, if at all, by which application? In other words, how can I be certain that it's still needed? How possible is it that the uninstall didn't remove the related .NET version?

Also, what about the two versions of Basic? Is that the same, that perhaps one version is specific to an application? And if, so, again, how might I determine which applications, if any, are using them.

Any reason you would not support Plodr's suggestion to download and reinstall Basic v6? And if you do feel this is a good idea, should I uninstall the most current version first?

And finally, would you support brandypepper's suggestion to restore? From my standpoint, this sounds like I might be getting into a whole lot of reinstalling and such. But if you guys feel it's best practice to do this, I will "bite the bullet" and do it.

Ok, i don't know where this thing came from….
i was usign avast and it did nothing…
i uninstalled it and installed kaspersky

now virus.win32.virut.ce has infected many exe files.
Some important files like explorer.exe and svchost.exe
hell even the host file was infected. After cleaning them up, they all became useless. When i tried executing explorer.exe through taskmanager, it gave me error: not vaild win32 application.

I don't want to format coz i have very important files on my pc.
The virus has even disabled kaspersky…. can't open it.
Explorer.exe is not working, i can't even go through files.

I will be doing a scan in safe mode.
If you guys know how to get rid of it, please tell me.

BSOD Blue Screen of Death marks the end of an era by mikebaird

Seems as though alot of you are having similar issues with Vista.
I (my wife have a DELL Inspiron 545S, INTEL Duo CPU, 6G RAM, 64-bit

Windows will not run, Blue Screen 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3

Vista goes through the boot up routine, albeit slowly, just as it completes most of the icon update/display, the "BLUE" screen appears with Windows detected a problem and is shutting down. This happened once before and I was able to correct it by restoring to an earlier configuration. I've done all that, restored prior to the issue, last good config, repair PC, etc. Nothing works. Any ideas besides a clean install? Will updating to Win7 overright all of her personal files and data?

I have to open in Safe Mode to do anything, so I can't get to the internet or print.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

When you try to install IIS on a computer that is running Windows XP Pro you might get this message:

Setup cannot copy the file staxmem.dll. Please insert the “Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2(3) CD”.

And then when you put the Windows XP Pro SP2(3) CD in your CD drive, Setup cannot find the Staxmem.dll file. This problem can be fixed pretty easily with a simple command line execution.

So here is what you will do.

1. Click Start, Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

2. At the command prompt type esentutl /g C:\Window\security\database\secedit.sdb then hit enter (*note if this doesn't work then search for the secedit.sdb and enter that path into replace the C:\windows\etc….then it should work)

3. You will get an output that should look like

4. Try to install IIS again. If you still have problems then you will need to repair the local group policy with this command at the prompt

5. Click Start, Run, type cmd, hit enter, then type esentutl /p C:\Windows\security\database\secedit.sdb (*Note, again if this errors then make sure the path is the correct location for the secedit.sdb)

6. Put your windows disk in the drive and retry the install. It should work now.
